April 1985

In April 1985, I was 12 years old and a Girl Guide in Monkton, Ontario. 1985 was a celebration year for Guiding in Canada (75th - I had to look this up) and my group discussed ways to celebrate. I had an idea at a meeting - I suggested that we make time capsules to be opened in 25 years. The group agreed that that was a sound idea and we proceeded.

The time capsule, which spent its first 17 years of existence in my closet at my parents' house, is something that I re-locate every few years. I last located the time capsule in summer 2005 during an M.Ed. course. Our prof directed us to bring something unique to class to introduce ourselves; something that could tell a story. The time capsule certainly fit the bill as being quite unique. I had many stories about Girl Guides (for instance, Guiding, or Brownies specifically, is how I met my oldest friend).

Anyway, I "found" the time capsule again tonight at the bottom of a basket in our computer room. I was delighted to read, "Do not open until 2010" - that's soon!

My husband Graham, forever the computer programmer/analyst, suggested a blog to commemorate the event - complete with the itemized list once I open it in 2010, photos, the other members of the group, etc.

Here goes...

As an addendum, there is a photo attached - though it is a good photo of me, as young person I was never particularly fond of it - as a child/adolescent I was terribly embarrassed about my teeth and couldn't wait for the day I could finally get braces to correct them. The story ends well - after years of orthodontics and one surgery, I have a nice smile.
